“Pilipili: (also known as African Devil, African Bird’s Eye or African red devil) is a cultivar of Capsicum frutescens, one of the sources of chili pepper, that grows both wild and domesticated. It is a small and extremely spicy member of the capsicum (Capsicum) genus. From the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, this word is used throughout tropical Africa to refer to hot red peppers, sauces made from them, and foods cooked with these peppers or sauces.”

“Although capsaicin produces a burning, painful sensation when you bite into a chili, it also triggers the release of pleasure chemicals that make us feel exhilarated and euphoric. Once capsaicin activates the heat receptor, a chemical known as substance P transmits a pain message from the neurons to the brain. When the brain registers pain, it responds with a dose of self-medication: the release of endorphins.

At the same time substance P is causing pain, it also rewards that pain by prompting release of dopamine, the chemical version of positive reinforcement. Besides chilies, certain foods, sex, and drugs can trigger the release of dopamine.”

What’s SUP?? Stand Up Paddle is an ancient form of surfing that is making a radical comeback due to great technological advances in materials and some of the biggest names in surfing taking it up as a primary form of exercise and all-round fun. Originally a Polynesian mode of transport and wave-riding, SUP has now taken off as a world-wide phenomenon that incorporates flat water, wave-riding and every muscle group in your body! From the leisure aspect you can take your board and paddle, choose one of our various lakes or estuaries, and go for what will be as close to “a walk on water” as you’ll ever get. The perspective you get from standing upright is amazing. You look down on reef, fish and whatever else (saw a Raggie in Swartvlei a while ago) is down there while you glide silently over the surface. If you decide to move to the next level you can take to the waves. Initially you can start on the tiniest of waves because you have the help of your paddle and can ride almost anything. We have a variety of surfing spots in the area which can accommodate all levels of SUP-surfers, from the small shore break at Buffs bayside to the bigger point breaks we have around here. Because of the increased speed and board size you have with a Stand Up Paddle there is no need to congest the spots that regular surfers favour. You and your friends can take your SUPs and surf those breaks that no one else wants, you can have great fun whether its in huge swell or a mushie foamy heading for the beach. If you take up Stand Up Paddling you can shelf that diet and cancel your gym membership since that will be taken care of while you have hours of fun on the water and in the sun. They even look cool strapped to your car!

PiliPili Downwinder

Had an absolute blast a couple of days ago doing a downwinder from Groenvlei beach to Swartvlei beach. The wind was a solid SE and kite sizes varied from 8 to 12m. This stretch of coast is pristine and you see it in a way that not many do. Dolphins, great waves and sweet wind…what better?

Parking at PiliPili/Bungalo Restaurant we packed the blue bus and headed off to the starting point. From there the driver/back up dude would meet us at various stops along the way for drinks, gear changes etc. and then meet us at the end destination with a couple of cold ones.

The 6.5km took us about 3 hours. If this sounds like your cup of tea, join our subscription service and we’ll keep you posted!

Summer Easterlies seem to be early this year and no one’s complaining. The Launch party was amazing – very relaxed with a bit of an extreme edge, just the way we like it.

We are having our official launch party on Saturday 19 September. There should be a few interesting characters, some cold beers and of course the PiriPiri Chicken…RSVP and we’ll keep you posted.
